Dear Sixth Grade,
I am so thankful to have you in my class this year! Welcome to Middle School!! My goal is that you will feel welcomed in our classroom, and that you will be valued as a member of our class. In language arts this year, we will learn many new skills in the areas of vocabulary, reading comprehension, writing, speaking, and grammar. I will be putting my best foot forward every day. I expect that you will do the same for me! Remember: I believe in you. I want you to succeed. You are heard. You are treasured. You are important. You WILL succeed! Mrs. Derstine |

About Mrs. Derstine:
I am originally from Pennsylvania where I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Secondary English Education from Grove City College. This will be my fourth year teaching Language Arts at Ligon Middle School, and I will also continue to serve as co-team lead. I LOVE working with our sixth grade team as we continue to brainstorm new and engaging learning experiences for our students.
During the summer of 2016, I had the privilege of becoming a Kenan Fellow through NC State University. During this experience, I was able to work in a REAL science lab at the Natural Science Museum. While I LOVE teaching language arts, this experience gave me a new appreciation for science. My fellowship pushed me outside my comfort zone and gave me new and exciting ways to incorporate hands-on learning in the classroom!
When I'm not at Ligon, I enjoy hiking with my husband, trying new restaurants, and traveling. Some of my favorite things include chips (ask Ms. Flythe), chocolate, and coffee!
